Field Sessions

Field Sessions are small, purposeful outings where we connect—with our surroundings, with one another, and with the stories that shape this place. Regardless of what we’re photographing, each session helps us see with intention, build relationships through photography, and contribute to Leelanau’s living history.

What to Expect

  • Each session has a subject (place, event, theme)
  • You’ll be invited to focus on a paired skill
  • We shoot in real-world light, weather, and time constraints
  • You’ll leave with work ready to submit to a project
  • Sessions are free, informal, and beginner-friendly
  • Come as you are—any camera is welcome

How We Approach the Work

Photography at LPC isn’t about chasing perfect shots—it’s about learning to see, taking the time to make, and choosing what to do with the results. Field Sessions aren’t classes or tours. They’re opportunities to slow down, look closely, and practice the kind of image-making that builds meaning over time.

We don’t separate creativity from documentation. We treat both as ways of paying attention. That’s what these sessions are for.

See. Shoot. Share.

See

Each session begins with observation. The subject is introduced with context—historical, environmental, visual—so you can approach it with intention.

Shoot

You’ll photograph on-site, at your own pace. Some sessions focus on technique. Others lean into story, light, or experimentation. The goal is to do the work, not perform it.

Share

After the session, your images don’t disappear—they evolve.

Some stay private. Some are shared informally for fun or feedback. Others become part of our club collections—gathered, reflected on, and sometimes displayed. And a few go further, submitted to the archives to become part of Leelanau’s visual history for future generations.

Field Sessions are a starting point. What happens next depends on what you saw, how you shot, and what the image deserves to become.

Host a Session

Have a subject in mind? A skill worth practicing? You don’t need to be an expert—just someone willing to guide others through the process of seeing and shooting with intention.
